Produced by Ford for more than 34 years, the Ford Taurus was a staple in Ford’s model line. For 10 straight years starting 1992, it was the best-selling car in the United States. It was introduced in 1985 and became the car that saved the Ford Motor Company from bankruptcy. A pioneer of Ford’s statistical process control systems, over eight million Taurus vehicles were produced in seven generations. In other markets, the Taurus nameplate is used for an eighth generation, which is a fifth-generation Ford Mondeo.
The Ford Taurus exited the US market for the 2019 model year. It was available in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) with the SE, SEL, and Limited trim levels. A six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission was standard. It was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 288 hp and 254 pound-feet of torque. Base features included 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, speed-sensitive windshield wipers, power side mirrors, laminated glass, power front seats with manual lumbar, a 4.2-inch LCD screen with voice recognition and 911 Assist, a six-speaker sound system, remote keyless entry, carpet front and rear floor mats, and a host of active safety features such as AdvanceTrac with curve control electronic stability control, low tire pressure warning, and a back-up camera.
Why Was the Ford Taurus So Popular?
For a long time, the Ford Taurus was considered the ideal family car, offering reliability, ample space, and strong performance. It was a significant improvement in terms of quality and dependability especially when compared to the Tempo, Escort, and Thunderbird. While the Ford Taurus offered sporty performance with its V6 and V8 engine offerings, it never compromised on ride comfort through its enhanced suspension system and interior amenities.
Is the Ford Taurus SHO a Fast Car?
The Ford Taurus SHO, or “Super High Output” is the performance variant of the Ford Taurus that debuted in 1989. The 2019 Ford Taurus SHO can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, according to a test done by Car and Driver magazine. This should come as no surprise with its 365-hp twin-turbo V6 powertrain.
